"a pinnacle film that did what so few had done before—questioned the motives behind darling TV or radio personalities and the media that creates them" -Emily Kubincanek, FilmSchoolRejects

Andy Griffith stars as Lonesome Rhodes, a drifter who becomes the subject of a radio show after he grabs their attention with his funny and charming folk songs. His rise to fame is quick and explosive, allowing him to revel in all of the benefits of celebrity, and exposes him (only to who immediately surround him, the ones that discovered him) as the cruel and conniving figure he actually is at his core. After time, he uses his power to launch a political campaign, with his increasingly erratic and petulant bad behaviour threatening his rise to the top.

It almost goes without saying that in the current climate, A Face in the Crowd has resurfaced as a necessary watch about the nature and danger of celebrity and the institutions that create them. Kazan's film is an aggressive breakdown of the megalomaniacal main character, Lonesome Rhodes, starting at the beginning as a charismatic folksy hero and then careening towards the booming, unhinged person he becomes. A Face in the Crowd stands as a timeless critique on the pitfalls of American society, which is so jarringly accurate to what is happening right now in the news cycle, that this big screen watch will be nothing if not captivating.
